Awesome Sams Club Hack: Free Food Storage Bins

Frosting Buckets from Sams Club

My good friend gave me this Sams Club “hack” years ago while we were living Memphis and our husbands were attending Optometry School. We were students on a tight budget and so we were always looking for ways to save money. (I’ve been in that phase for a majority of my life it seems!). This hack is simple but requires work. First, head to your local Sams Club and ask the bakery if they have extra frosting bins (you can call ahead too). Next, if they have some bins available, you pick them up, and take those messy, sticky bins home. Usually, they provide a big plastic bag for the messy bins. Last thing is, you wash them out and bam! Now you have some high quality food storage bins that you got for zero dollars.

Maybe you are thinking, “no thanks Ashley, i’m going to hit up Amazon because this whole cleaning-out-bins-deal is not worth my time.” That’s fine, I get it! However, if you are in a situation where you do not want to spend your money on bins, this hack is for you. I’m not entirely sure these containers can be qualified as having an air-tight seal but many of the bins seal very tightly. To illustrate how thrifty these bins are, I have quite a few bulk food items like sugar, rice, oats, flours and beans, and so I would need to buy around 6 large bins. I found a similar bin on Amazon and the price tag was $30 for one storage bin. Basically, I’m saving $180 and I’ll take that savings!
